Medaryville Area GuideMedaryville is a part of the White Post Township in Pulaski County, with a population of 565. Famous for sightings of the ghostly apparition on the highway, Medaryville was first laid out in 1852, just ahead of the construction of the New Albany and Salem Railroad (later renamed the Monon Railroad).
Most likely named after Samuel Medary, an Ohio newspaper editor and politician who migrated west with the settlers, Medary was the last governor of the Minnesota territory before it gained statehood and was also later named a governor of the Kansas territory and had other towns named for him as well in Wisconsin as well as South Dakota. At the turn of the 20th century, Medaryville experienced an oil rush with wells being drilled on the west, just outside of town and a refinery was built at the small town of Asphaltum. Oil production was limited and the quality of the oil was poor, and the business was abandoned fairly quickly. A revival was attempted in the 1950’s and again in the 80’s but without success. Today, Medaryville faces the challenge of today’s economy by moving forward, businesses and residents meeting that challenge every day.
